Urenco Deutschland is Urenco's German enrichment facility. It is located close to the Dutch/German border in North Rhine Westphalia, around 40km from our Dutch enrichment facility.
Key facts
Our current production capacity is 3,400 tSW/a.
We began our operations in 1985.
The facility's Managing Director is Dr Jörg Harren.
At our Gronau facility, we enrich uranium for low carbon power generation using centrifuge technology designed and deployed by Urenco. Like all our enrichment facilities, we operate within a framework of high environmental, social responsibility and corporate governance standards. Since we started production in the 80s the enriched material produced at our site is enough to fuel Germany for 13 years.
Urenco is investing in its Gronau site through refurbishment and expansion projects that include the installation of new centrifuge cascades. As part of Urenco’s global capacity programme, the investment will increase enrichment capacity by around 20%, helping to meet growing customer demand and support a secure, reliable supply of low-carbon energy. Learn more about the programme on our enrichment services page.
In 2020, our Technology and Development function was created to bundle our technology capacities and business development activities across the organisation, as well as decommissioning, reuse and disposal of assets requirements. Primarily based at the Urenco Technology Centre in Gronau, UTD consist of a multi-disciplinary group of employees of different nationalities.
Creating positive impact
Sustainability
Sustainability is at the very heart of who we are and what we do. Nuclear power plays an important role in meeting the world's low carbon energy demands and its production requires processes that are efficient, safe and cost effective.
At our Gronau site, a new solar park is helping to increase the use of renewable energy and support grid stability. The project forms part of Urenco’s wider commitment to reducing operational emissions and achieving net zero by 2040.

We have a long history of supporting our local communities. We regularly offer both practical and financial support, which includes a programme of employee volunteering.
We are particularly proud of our annual Safety Day, where employees, their families, community members and local companies spend a day focused on safety. We organise interactive activities and games to highlight the importance of safety at work, home and whilst travelling.
Our education focussed partnership with House of Little Scientists research centre inspires young people to explore STEM subjects, and our sponsorship of local sports clubs and activities promote healthy, active communities. We also contribute to the cultural life of Gronau, such as support for a 3D bronze map of the town centre, which helps residents and visitors explore and navigate the city.
