17.2 million SWU/year capacity

Our global enrichment capacity generates enough nuclear energy to supply more than 95% of all EU and UK households or more than 50% of all US households for a whole year. Our capcity programme is set to increase this even further.

Urenco’s enrichment operations

Urenco’s low enriched uranium (LEU) is used to produce the fuel that powers today’s fleet of nuclear reactors worldwide, delivering reliable, low‑carbon electricity to millions of homes and businesses.

This capability is built on decades of expertise in centrifuge enrichment technology, a highly efficient process that separates uranium isotopes to produce fuel-grade material. This proven technology underpins our ability to deliver consistent, high-quality supply to customers across the global nuclear industry.

Using the same centrifuge technology, we are actively investing next‑generation fuels to meet the needs of small and advanced reactors, and enriching isotopes for medical, research and industrial purposes.

All of our operations are conducted to the highest standards of safety, security and regulatory compliance, within a robust international safeguards framework. We work closely with national regulators and global bodies to ensure our enrichment activities are carried out responsibly and transparently at every stage.

Operations in four countries

We operate enrichment facilities in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States, which delivers security of supply and the ability to flex around market demands. It also allows us to provide reliability and diversity for our customers. Discover more about each of our sites below:

Germany

Our German enrichment facility is located in Gronau. Its current production capacity is 3,600 tSW/a. Central Technology Group, responsible for enhancing the operation of Urenco’s centrifuge technology, is also based at Urenco Deutschland.

Netherlands

Our Dutch enrichment facility is located in Almelo. Its current production capacity is 5,100 tSW/a. Our stable isotopes business is also based at Urenco Nederland.

United Kingdom

Our UK enrichment facility is located in Capenhurst. Its current production capacity is 4,500 tSW/a. Our subsidiaries dedicated to overseeing our work in responsible nuclear stewardship are also based at our Capenhurst site.

United States

Our US enrichment facility is located in Eunice, New Mexico. It is the only commercial enrichment facility operating in the US, with a current production capacity of 4,400 tSW/a.

Expanding global enrichment capacity

Urenco is investing in the future of reliable nuclear fuel supply by expanding uranium enrichment capacity across its global operations. Over the next decade, we will install a total of 4.6 million separative work units (SWU) of new capacity across our sites in the United States, the Netherlands and Germany.

Expansion in the United States

We have announced plans to construct a new enrichment facility at our US site, adding 2.1 million SWU of capacity. This investment represents a significant step forward in strengthening our ability to support customers and enhance long term energy security.

Once operational from 2032, the new plant will increase capacity at our US site by nearly 50%, enabling us to supply more than 45% of US demand for enriched uranium.

We have also reached the halfway point of our original project to add 700,000 SWU, with new cascades already delivered ahead of schedule and on budget.

Expansion across Europe

In Europe, construction of a new centrifuge hall at our site in Almelo, the Netherlands, is progressing as planned. In 2025, we announced our intention to double our expansion target, adding a further 1.5 million SWU of capacity, with the latter phase expected to come online from 2030 onwards.

At our German site, construction activity on our expansion project is also continuing, supporting our long-term growth ambitions and customer commitments.

Maintaining and enhancing existing capacity

Alongside new build projects, we are accelerating centrifuge refurbishment programmes across our sites to maintain high levels of production and operational efficiency.

In the UK, we are seeing strong progress with refurbishment campaigns, with work well underway across multiple cascades. Two enrichment plants have also been brought back online following major upgrades, further strengthening our overall capacity and resilience.
