Services
Enrichment
Two enrichment plants, SP4 and SP5, are in operation at our Almelo site. SP5 began operations in 2000 and produces more than 90% of Urenco Nederland’s total production capacity.
To meet growing customer demand for nuclear fuel services, construction of a new centrifuge hall is underway and progressing as planned. We intend to double the site’s expansion target by adding a further 1.5 million SWU of capacity, with the latter phase of the expansion planned to come online from 2030 onwards.
Our Urenco Isotopes business is also located in Almelo, where we use our centrifuge technology to produce a variety of isotopes for medical, industrial and research applications.
Each year, more than 2 million patient treatments are performed using nuclear medicines produced with Urenco's isotopes. Beyond healthcare, our isotopes enable innovation in areas such as quantum computing, advanced materials and semiconductor technologies.
We have several initiatives on site to help reduce our environmental footprint.
We have around 8,000 solar panels on the roof of our storage building and on the carports in our car park.
We are constructing an internal heat grid, to use the residual heat from our enrichment plant for heating buildings on site. This will allow us to become less reliant on natural gas. Discussions are ongoing to also become the source for an external heat grid.
We are replacing our cylinder handling vehicles with electric vehicles.
Supporting and engaging regularly with our local communities is key to our sustainability approach. We sponsor various sporting and cultural activities throughout the year and volunteer to support residents, schools and charities.
Nurturing an interest in science and engineering among young people is also a core part of what we do. Every year, we facilitate science workshops and other educational activities for local schools.
Our major educational project with the local science museum Oyfo has enabled the creation of an interactive wall that helps introduce children to world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
