Ground broken for construction of heat network at Urenco enrichment site

18 February 2026 Global

The groundbreaking has taken place for a new net zero project at Urenco’s Netherlands site which will recycle waste heat from the enrichment process.

An internal heat network will provide a contained, thermal energy distribution system, taking residual heat from the cooling of our uranium cylinders.

Hot water will be generated and then circulated via insulated pipework throughout multiple buildings on-site to heat them.

The initial phase of the project will see the construction of a heat grid and utility building, with the remaining infrastructure to connect the network across the site being completed at a later date.

The project will enable us to significantly reduce our natural gas consumption in Almelo and therefore lower Scope 1 emissions.

The network is expected to be operational by 2029 and is fully aligned with Urenco’s 2030 net zero objectives.

Urenco’s Senior Project Manager, Net Zero, Martijn Kolkman said:

“With the launch of our internal heat network, we are turning the industrial residual heat from our processes into a powerful and clean source of energy for our site.

“By reusing what is already available, we will be able to heat our buildings using energy created ourselves in a way that is truly circular.”
