Urenco donates £7,000 to charity to mark safety milestone

27 June 2019

Urenco ChemPlants presented a cheque of £3,500 to Rod Whiteside, a volunteer with Bowel Cancer UK, to mark seven million safe working hours on the new Tails Management Facility (TMF) at Capenhurst during its development phase.

The cheque was presented by Steve Walsh, who works for TMF’s operations team.   When Steve’s mum was diagnosed with the disease last year, the charity provided support to her and the family. Steve has also raised funds in a personal capacity for the charity by running in the Liverpool Rock n Roll half marathon in May.

Luke Squires, Director of Fundraising at Bowel Cancer UK, said: “We are very grateful to Urenco ChemPlants Limited for their generous donation. We are also incredibly proud of their colleague Steve Walsh who ran the Liverpool Rock n Roll half marathon for the charity to support his mother who is being treated for bowel cancer. The disease is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer and fourth most common cancer in the UK, but if diagnosed early, it can be treatable and curable.  With organisations like Urenco ChemPlants Limited and amazing people such as Steve leading the way, we can help stop people dying from this dreadful disease.”

Steve Walsh commented:  “I was really pleased to be asked to do this on behalf of the company as it gives me an opportunity to say a personal ‘thank you’ for everything the charity has done for me and my family during what has been a very difficult time.”

A total of £7,000 was set aside by the company for charity as a result of achieving seven million safe working hours.

In addition to the money given to Bowel Cancer UK today, a further £3,500 was donated to Claire House Children’s Hospice based in Wirral and Liverpool.

Doug Annan, Urenco ChemPlants Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to donate this money to both Bowel Cancer UK and to Claire House Hospice.  It is a testament to the hard work and effort put in by everyone working on the development of TMF at Capenhurst and their commitment to embedding a safety culture which has become a way of life.”
