Urenco has improved upon its score for its sustainability credentials – in just its second year of undergoing an external assessment.
We maintained our bronze medal rating from EcoVadis, a world leader in sustainability ratings for business.
But our overall score increased from 50 to 59 percent on last year, meaning we are higher than/equal to the score of 70 percent of all global companies rated by the organisation.
The assessment concerns four pillars: Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement.
Urenco did particularly well in relation to its environment score, while still scoring strongly in other areas. It is taking action to boost its sustainable procurement score and overall sustainability rating.
This news comes as Urenco has secured a low-carbon supply of nuclear-generated electricity for its UK site in Cheshire to ensure it hits its scope 2 near-term, emissions target in 2030.
EDF low-carbon contract signed for Urenco's UK site
Urenco’s goal is to reach net zero overall by 2040, reducing our scope 1 (direct) & 2 (from purchased electricity) emissions in actual terms by 90% by 2030.
As part of the 2030 near-term target, all four of our enrichment sites will need a low-carbon supply of electricity – and this new agreement with EDF Business Solutions , whom we have our current contract with, enables our UK site to achieve this. Our Netherlands site secured a similar contract earlier this summer.
Head of Sustainability at Urenco, Rob Little, said:
“We are proud to have made steady progress throughout the business this year.
“This is a continuous process and we have already demonstrated as a company that we are capable of backing our words with action when it comes to net zero and more widely, sustainability.
“Having ensured that two of our four sites have a low-carbon supply of electricity into the 2030s leaves us ideally placed to meet our scope 2 target; and the UK one is simply a continuation of a current, low carbon agreement.
“We are confident we can achieve a similar feat at our two remaining sites.”
Director of Large Business at EDF, Raghav Singh, said:
“We’re very excited to be continuing our close relationship with Urenco for another five years.
“By supplying them with our Zero Carbon for Business energy product, we’ll be supporting their sustainability goals and net zero ambitions.
“Our companies are well aligned, with both sharing the belief that as a dependable, zero-carbon energy source, nuclear power is playing a crucial role in the UK’s journey toward achieving net zero.”
