Urenco discussed the importance of reaching net zero and the steps it was taking itself to reach its targets – at a European conference for young people in the industry.
Colleagues from Urenco’s Netherlands’ site travelled to the European Nuclear Young Generation Forum (ENYGF) in Krakow, Poland.
The European congress is held once every two years and alternates with an international congress.
Chairman of the NetZero Working Group at Urenco Nederland, Christiaan Prenger, was a speaker on a panel session concerning the role of nuclear in the energy transition.
He stressed the importance of decarbonising the supply chain in addition to companies looking at their own direct emissions.
He also talked about some of the specific actions Urenco was taking on-site to reduce emissions, such as commissioning a project in which the natural gas consumption of a recycling centre was reduced to zero.
Natural gas was used to generate steam to condition the incoming air of the ventilation system. This system was replaced with one which uses waste heat from the enrichment plant, saving an estimated 90,000 m3 of gas per year, a saving equivalent to powering around 73 UK homes with gas per year.
After the panel session, the wider team delivered a workshop based around a card game on reaching net zero.
Colleagues also took part in the ENYGF’s career day, where they spoke to young people about jobs at Urenco and the career paths it offers. You can find out more here.
