Storage of nuclear materials

Urenco Nuclear Stewardship draws on decades of combined nuclear experience and expertise from across our workforce to deliver the safe and responsible storage of nuclear materials. We are currently responsible for the management of over 95% of the UK’s uranic inventory, securing material for the next 90 years.

Our Nuclear Stewardship team ensures that all materials under our care are safely and securely managed throughout their lifecycles. We assess and monitor material condition to reduce hazards, protect people and the environment, and maintain the highest standards of safety during long-term storage.

Our work includes the inspection and management of legacy materials, such as cylinders, fuel reprocessing drums, and uranic materials from Urenco UK operations. Drawing on our in-house expertise, we design purpose-built facilities and deliver tailored solutions – from material treatment through to complex, long-term infrastructure projects.

As part of its Submarine Dismantling Project, the Ministry of Defence is tasked with providing a safe, environmentally responsible and cost-effective solution for dismantling the UK’s nuclear-powered submarines after they have left the active service of the Royal Navy.

In 2015 Urenco was selected by the Ministry of Defence to store and manage 27 de-fuelled and decommissioned Reactor Pressure Vessels (RPVs). We have supported the responsible management of these complex assets, providing long-term storage solutions for RPVs as part of the UK’s nuclear stewardship programme.

Some components will require storage until geological disposal is available, reflecting the long-term nature of this nationally significant mission.

In addition to storage, we are working in partnership with the Ministry of Defence to develop safe, efficient approaches for the transport and dismantling of such large reactor components, drawing on our expertise in nuclear materials management and decommissioning.
