Partnership helping hundreds of women study nuclear science

14 June 2023 Global News

Urenco’s support for an IAEA programme to help increase the number of women in nuclear has impacted the lives of more than 350 so far around the world.

Urenco’s support for an IAEA programme to help increase the number of women in nuclear has impacted the lives of more than 350 so far around the world.

Head of Sustainability, Rob Little, told an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) briefing of the Secretariat on June 12 that Urenco’s support plays a significant role in its commitment to have a more diverse and inclusive business, and for the nuclear sector more widely.

Urenco has a social impact partnership with the IAEA, which includes the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP), for which it makes an annual donation.

This complements the company’s own ambition to attract, develop and retain more female talent.

Rob said: “As we sponsor the programme we are in a fortunate position to have access to a talented pool of young professionals.

“IAEA provide up to 12 month internship placements to their alumni and Urenco is in the process of identifying how we can also support alumni through paid internships at our sites across the group.

“We are exploring the opportunity within a number of different disciplines.”

The MSCFP provides scholarships to young women studying for a Master’s degree in a nuclear-related subject.

This aligns with our sustainability strategy and selected UN sustainable development goals of promoting equality of opportunity, advocating for the contribution of women to a profession, and improving gender balance within the nuclear industry.

Additionally, Urenco aims to have more than 30 percent of women in leadership or management roles by 2025, and more than 20 percent of the workforce from underrepresented groups by the same year.

There is a wider ambition in the industry, set by the non-profit organisation Women in Nuclear, to have 40 percent of women employed in nuclear by 2030. Urenco is a proud supporter of this.
