Urenco’s Head of Uranium Asset Management, Matt Bowling, told the conference in Monaco on April 16 that collaboration in the fuel supply chain was vital to achieving goals and tackling challenges.
This included both the established low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel market, and the emerging advanced fuels’ market for high-assay, low enriched uranium (HALEU).
Urenco is building the western world’s first commercial HALEU plant at its Capenhurst site in the UK by 2031, with the co-funding of the UK Government.
It will be capable of supplying the first of a kind advanced reactors globally, with a planned output of up to 27 tonnes of HALEU.
Aside from the enrichment to produce HALEU, which Urenco is addressing, there must be alignment elsewhere in the supply chain, including for the deconversion step.
Matt also mentioned the importance of political support in the European Union for a reduction on Russian uranium imports. This would be to align itself with the ban already in place in the United States, to ensure fairness in the enrichment market. Plans under the REPowerEU Roadmap could see this happen.
Separately, Urenco’s Vice President for Marketing and Sales, Michael Bryant, presented a panel on April 15 of the conference, entitled Accelerating Global Demand.
It featured leading nuclear operators and utilities from around the world including EDF, Southern Nuclear, The Federation of Electric Power Companies (Japan) and Nuclear Power Plants Authority (Egypt).
Key points included the benefits of securing nuclear fuel supply in a timely manner, especially for new build projects, and giving confidence to the finance community by doing this.
