A contract to store Ministry of Defence (MOD) submarine reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) at Urenco Nuclear Stewardship in Capenhurst was signed on Friday 3 November.
This follows the announcement last year we were the MOD’s preferred site.
Urenco Nuclear Stewardship, formerly called Capenhurst Nuclear Services, will be responsible for the interim storage of the RPVs removed from 27 defuelled nuclear submarines after they have left the Royal Navy’s service. This followed a thorough site selection process and a formal 14-week public consultation with the community around the site.
Interim storage of the RPVs at Capenhurst is in advance of final disposal at the UK’s planned Geological Disposal Facility, when it becomes available some time after 2040.
Urenco Nuclear Stewardship rebranded from Capenhurst Nuclear Services (CNS) from 30 October 2017 to reflect its integral role in Urenco.
This is part of Urenco's new organisational-wide strategy, a key pillar of which is to broaden the services Urenco provides to the nuclear industry.
