Celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Recently, UUSA celebrated the many women serving in engineering and scientific roles within our organization for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Many of these women encourage the next generation of female scientists through their participation in UUSA’s Richie Enrichment Science Workshops, attending local career fairs, supporting professional organizations, and participating in other STEM initiatives.

We asked a few of our employees to share what it’s like to work in a STEM field—and what the best part of their job is.

Tiffany Creed works as a Radiological Protection Technician at UUSA. Her job is to ensure that everyone on-site maintains the requirements for radiological safety. “I am grateful to be a part of a work environment that is critical for our future,” shared Creed. “I will strive to continue representing and encouraging women in STEM. When you choose a career in STEM…there is no limit!”

Emily Capello, another member of UUSA’s Radiological Protection team stated: “Working in STEM makes me feel like every day I come to work I am working towards a brighter and cleaner future.”

Similarly, Shelly King, who works as a Recycling Technician at UUSA, shared: “I have always been a problem-solver and I also have a love for agriculture. When I was in high school, I had a job performing research on cotton plants and the diseases that kill the plants. I was determined to grow a cotton plant that was disease-resistant. This job encouraged me to pursue a career in science. The best part about working in STEM is that it is always challenging and never boring. A career in STEM enables you to make a difference in the lives of others.”

“In school, I realized that I always became most excited when it came to my science and math classes,” shared Sara Orcutt, a member of our Chemistry team. “The best part about working in STEM is that you are always learning something new.”

Bonnie Saucedo, who currently acts as the Chemistry Manager at UUSA stated: “The possibilities are endless in STEM and there’s so many things to study. It’s a great field to go into—it’s dynamic and it’s a constant environment of learning, which I love. It keeps me engaged.”

At UUSA, we’re proud to work with a number of female scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Their perspectives help us innovate and problem-solve each and every day. Thanks to our team, we know that UUSA will continue to thrive.
