Urenco’s social impact partnership with New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) is strengthening our focus on local recruitment by equipping students with the relevant skills and qualifications.
Students study for their Energy Technology Certificate and Associates Degree Program, which includes a coop position with Urenco, as well as national industry-measured skills and behavior testing for pre-employment.
Steve Saicedo, Vice President for Workforce Development, NMJC said:
“Our partnership will enable students from the local area to recognize their potential and access innovative and rewarding careers. We are committed to supporting the next generation of workforce across the energy sector. The current students in the program are great examples of how local talent can become Urenco’s future workforce.”
This partnership builds on Urenco’s existing work with the Career and Technical Education Center of Hobbs (CTECH) where we have co-developed the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) curriculum for 14 – 18 year olds. CTECH high school students are not only well placed to apply for positions in Urenco’s operations and maintenance area, but can also now apply to study further and specialise at NMJC so that they will be ready to pursue careers as entry level technicians.
Lisa Hardison, Director of Community Relations for Urenco USA (UUSA), said:
"This program, in conjunction with other education efforts, is helping UUSA progress towards our goal of achieving 60% of new hires from the local area. We are excited to have partners that are committed to growing our area talent to meet the workforce needs of our industry.
“The enrolment levels at CTECH and NMJC have significantly grown over the past two years. Both programs offer a cooperative work experience to selected students, and these individuals have had the opportunity to work with UUSA, Enrichment Technologies US, as well as other long-term contractors that support the Eunice facility.”
