25th anniversary for enrichment plant SP5

15 May 2025 Urenco Nederland News

An indispensable asset in the global production capacity of the Urenco Group

On May 15, 2000 the Dutch uranium enrichment plant SP5 was officially opened. Today, a quarter of a century later, the thousands of centrifuges in that plant are still running non-stop at dazzling speeds, enriching uranium for nuclear power plants around the world for the generation of low carbon electricity.

Managing Director Ad Louter said: "The SP5 enrichment plant was gradually expanded to a total of seven halls between 2000 and 2012, and in 2024 we started construction of an eighth hall in response to the increased demand for nuclear energy as a secure and reliable energy source. SP5 is an extremely reliable plant with the highest safety standards. It is an indispensable asset in the global production capacity of the Urenco Group."

Urenco Netherlands is one of Urenco’s four enrichment sites. In total, Urenco enriched enough uranium in 2024 to generate carbon free nuclear power for 90% of households in the EU and UK.
