I am in the Marketing and Communications team for Urenco Isotopes, which is based in Almelo, Netherlands.

I started as a business development graduate in Urenco Nuclear Stewardship. The role caught my interest because it combined aspects of previous jobs I’d really enjoyed, such as events, marketing and bid writing.

In the Marketing and Communications team, I help raise Urenco Isotopes’ brand awareness and support revenue growth by creating marketing materials; organising our event attendance, including stands, presentations and general representation; creating LinkedIn posts; updating the website; and analysing our marketing analytics. I also support internal brand awareness and employee engagement by creating internal newsletters.

Early in my nuclear career, I completed the NSAN GAIN programme, which gives new starters a broad understanding of the nuclear industry, including its history, science and overall sector landscape.

Later, when I moved into a role specifically focused on marketing, Urenco sponsored my education and I successfully gained a Level 6 Diploma in Professional and Digital Marketing. This was a fantastic opportunity to professionalise and strengthen skills I had already developed throughout my career.

To someone considering applying to Urenco I would say go for it! Nuclear is a career I’m genuinely proud of; it’s full of interesting, skilled and passionate people and it plays a huge role in driving a net zero future.

Urenco looks after its employees and offers so many opportunities and different paths to explore. I started in decommissioning and have since moved into isotopes. You will meet people from all areas of the business and there is so much room to grow both personally and professionally.

I’m a graduate controls and instrumentation engineer on the rotational programme based at Urenco’s Capenhurst site. I applied expecting a lot of opportunity for growth and excited of the prospect of a mentor helping me achieve chartership. So far, I’m finding that the programme is even more centred towards this than I expected.

I have meetings with my manager and rotation lead to align the work I have with the competencies I will eventually need to prove in my chartership application. It is a fast route to chartership and includes important work that feels fulfilling.

We also have a monthly graduate meeting where we discuss our feelings about the programme, and our mentors are on standby to provide support. While there is a lot of guidance, each of us has a say in the overall direction we progress.

During my first placement spanning three months, I investigated functional safety; specifically, how increasing the proof testing interval of safety equipment in the Tails Management Facility affects the reliability of the equipment and how we can ensure it meets the safety requirements.

I also joined a group competition to propose a net-zero business idea (where the winners get a free trip to Paris). I attended problem solving meetings with other young engineers, had an expense paid overnight trip to the London Science Museum to promote STEM to school students, and received a lot of training.

Since joining, I have been very surprised by the general positivity throughout the site - the business is well set up for personal development, with a supportive mentor and colleagues offering support to get me up to speed.

If you are unsure, it is worth applying to this scheme. The interview process is straight forward, and the assessment centre was actually good fun. I am looking forward my next rotation!

I joined Urenco in 2025 as a graduate mechanical engineer after completing an MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough University. I am currently part of the Capenhurst Graduate Engineering Programme, completing a series of rotational placements across different facilities on site. These placements will give me the opportunity to experience a broad range of engineering environments and develop my understanding of how the site operates as a whole.

My decision to join Urenco was strongly influenced by recommendations from people who already worked here. Growing up locally, I knew several employees who consistently spoke about the friendly culture and the strong support the company provides. Since joining, that has absolutely matched my experience – everyone I have met has been welcoming, approachable, and always willing to help.

A key factor in my career choice was the opportunity to contribute to the wider transition to net zero. Working within a nuclear fuel facility offers a unique way to support the delivery of low-carbon energy. Being able to apply my engineering skills in a setting that has such a direct impact on a cleaner, more sustainable future was a major motivation towards my application.

My first placement has been at the Tails Management Facility (TMF). As a relatively new plant, TMF presents a steep but exciting learning curve. During my time here, I have reviewed and proposed testing procedures and delivered improvements to the plant. These experiences have allowed me to make meaningful contributions early in my career, accelerate my development through real engineering challenges, and work closely with experienced colleagues whose insight has been invaluable.

The graduate scheme places a strong emphasis on professional development and progression towards chartership. Each graduate is assigned a mentor who provides guidance and support throughout the programme. My experience so far has been very positive, and I feel I’m building a solid foundation for my future career.

My advice for anyone considering applying to the scheme is simple: apply – it’s an opportunity to grow, contribute to a meaningful mission, and work with people who genuinely want you to succeed. The early career experience I’ve gained has been instrumental, and you will struggle to find a better place to begin your journey.

I’m a graduate process engineer on the Engineering Graduate Scheme based at Urenco’s site in Capenhurst. I joined Urenco after graduating from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Chemical Engineering.

My role involves a wide range of tasks and activities. A typical day could involve the development of engineering improvements to the plant as well as working with other engineering disciplines to define and implement solutions. I could be creating technical drawings, producing calculations or be out on plant.

I was drawn to Urenco by its position at the core of the nuclear fuel cycle - enabling the generation of low carbon electricity that plays a crucial role in global decarbonisation.

One thing that stands out for me about Urenco is the opportunities to make meaningful contributions to work. From my first day, I’ve had the opportunity to take ownership of projects and utilise the knowledge and skills I’ve developed to affect real, positive change to plant. I’ve worked with a broad range of people, all of whom have been happy to support my development. There is also a big focus on developing the skills and experience required to become a Chartered Chemical Engineer. This is a big career goal of mine and it is encouraging to see Urenco matching this ambition.

My advice for future applicants is not to worry if you haven’t covered the nuclear industry in your university studies. As long as you’re passionate about the industry and keen to learn, you’ll do great at Urenco, and I would encourage you to apply.
