The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved Urenco’s near-term emissions reduction target for 2030, as it continues on a path towards being a net zero company by 2040.
This means Urenco’s target for 2030 is aligned to the science on reducing emissions and has been externally validated.
You can find Urenco on the SBTi’s website by using its company dashboard here.
The development comes as Urenco attends the Innovation Zero conference in London this week, the UK’s largest net-zero congress.
Net Zero Programme Manager for Urenco, Chris Pye, said:
“We’re delighted to have had our near-term 2030 target approved by the SBTi and will continue to move forward with our plan of action to reduce our emissions.
“Sustainability is a part of everything we do at Urenco, and the latest climate science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows it is still possible to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C, but we are dangerously close to that threshold.
“We must therefore all rise to the challenge to substantially reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and limit the damage of climate change.”
Our approved near-term target is to reduce in absolute terms our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% and scope 3 emissions by 30% (both by 2030) using 2019 as our baseline year. Additionally, we plan to neutralise any remaining scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Urenco is committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2040, and you can read our Net Zero Transition Plan here.
Chris will be speaking on April 30 at the Energy Forum stage of Innovation Zero, concerning the role of nuclear energy in the transition.
The SBTi is a corporate climate action organisation that validates whether companies’ emission actions are aligned to climate science.
