Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has selected Urenco USA (UUSA) to provide uranium enrichment services required to fuel up to four first-of-a-kind reactors in Canada.
Under the agreement, UUSA will deliver enriched uranium product to fuel up to four GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 SMRs expected to be constructed at a site adjacent to the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.
OPG becomes Urenco’s first commercial customer for enrichment services in Canada and is the also the first customer to sign a long-term fuel supply agreement for a small modular reactor.
The Darlington site is 70km east of Toronto and is currently responsible for generating over 20% of Ontario’s electricity, enough to power two million homes.
Urenco’s Chief Commercial Officer Laurent Odeh and Head of Sales Kirk Schnoebelen met OPG’s President and CEO Ken Hartwick to commemorate the new agreement during the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, France on November 29.
Laurent said: “New nuclear technology will play a vital part in both the decarbonisation of electricity and the strengthening of energy security around the world.
“Urenco has the knowledge and experience to play a leading role in the supply of enriched uranium for the reactors of tomorrow and is proud to be a supplier for this innovative and exciting project in Canada with our newest customer, OPG.”
OPG President and CEO, Ken Hartwick, said: “Access to clean energy at large scale is becoming a key determinant of a country’s competitiveness and security.
“Because of our leadership in nuclear generation and supply chains, Ontario and Canada are well-positioned to work with companies from like-minded ally nations to send an important message to the world that a safe, secure, clean global energy system is achievable through nuclear power.”
