Urenco focuses on delivery at nuclear energy event in Westminster

14 September 2023 Global News

Urenco attended Nuclear Week in Parliament, calling for the nuclear industry to come together and deliver the UK Government’s energy ambition.

A call for the nuclear industry to come together and deliver the UK Government’s energy ambition was made by Urenco’s Chief Commercial Officer this week. Laurent Odeh made the call at the Nuclear Week in Parliament Welcome Reception on Monday in Westminster, hosted by Speaker of the House, Sir Lindsay Hoyle at his official residence.

Laurent highlighted that after years of falling in and out of public and political favour there is again talk of a “new dawn” for nuclear power. He said that the UK nuclear industry must - with a General Election expected soon - seize the opportunity to deliver the government’s nuclear vision and secure the enormous strategic national benefits that can flow from it.

Laurent also highlighted the importance of the UK’s sovereign fuel capability to strengthen energy independence, adding that Urenco has the capabilities to fuel the new fleet of reactors across large scale, small scale and advanced reactors.

Other speakers at the Welcome Reception included Minister for Nuclear & Networks, Andrew Bowie MP; and Labour’s Shadow Secretary for Energy Security & Net Zero, Ed Miliband MP.

The purpose of Nuclear Week in Parliament, run by the Nuclear Industry Association,  is to promote the opportunities that nuclear energy presents within Parliament, to bring together key stakeholders and decision-makers to hold productive conversations and to help drive forward the UK nuclear industry. Urenco had a strong presence throughout as one of the Week’s main sponsors.

On the Tuesday, Urenco hosted a parliamentary drop-in event hosted by Stoke Poges constituency MP, Joy Morrissey. The event featured a carousel of Urenco subject matter experts including Debbie Breasley, UK Government Affairs Director; Dan Perry, Head of Talent Acquisition; Steve Threlfall, General Manager – Development Projects; and Adriana Ceruso, Business Development Lead – Medical Isotopes.

Parliamentarians and industry stakeholders were able to gain a deeper understanding of Urenco and the nuclear sector as well as raise key issues relevant to their parliamentary activity.  Over 50 industry and parliamentary stakeholders attended the event including Graham Stuart MP, Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero; and Trudy Harrison MP, Minister for Natural Environment and Land Use.

Urenco also supported the Nuclear Week in Parliament Skills and Apprenticeship Fair on the Tuesday afternoon. Hosted by Charlotte Nichols MP, the event brought together apprentices and graduates from across the sector to discuss with Parliamentarians the different routes into the sector and highlight the career opportunities available.

To close the week, Urenco attended the British Nuclear Showcase Reception on the Wednesday afternoon which included a key note speech by Andrew Bowie MP.
