Urenco supports new UK Hydrogen Roadmap

18 February 2021

Urenco has supported a new Hydrogen Roadmap agreed by the UK Nuclear Industry Council, which is co-chaired by the Minister for Business, Energy and Clean Growth and the Chairman of the Nuclear Industry Association.

The roadmap outlines how large-scale and advanced/small modular reactors (AMRs/SMRs) can produce both the power and the heat necessary to produce emissions-free hydrogen, or 'green hydrogen'. The contribution could be one-third of the UK’s clean hydrogen needs by 2050.

Boris Schucht, Chief Executive Officer of Urenco, said: “I strongly feel that nuclear power perfectly complements energy generated from renewables in a net zero world and the uses of hydrogen for the decarbonisation of several sectors. These three technologies belong together and they are the future of energy systems. We are ready to play our part in this using our core competencies and leading technology in uranium enrichment and our investment in next generation technologies and fuels, collaborating with industry partners and Governments to realise nuclear energy’s valuable role in achieving net zero goals.”
