Today, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy has published a paper called “Net Zero Needs Nuclear: A Roadmap to 2024”, which Urenco supports.
Facilitated by the UK Nuclear Industry Association, the paper articulates why the UK Government needs to make decisions in this Parliament to restore nuclear capacity to at least 10 GW by the early 2030s, which will help to build a net zero economy with prosperity shared across the UK.
The 10 actions identified in the paper would:
- Make it cheaper and easier to finance all nuclear projects
- Create two new large-scale nuclear projects to provide critical low-carbon power
- Enable the rapid deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) and continued progress on fusion
It is forecast these actions could:
- Saved the UK up to 30 million tonnes of emissions per year by 2035
- Create more than 90,000 jobs across the UK
In addition there would be improved UK energy security and grid stability and the UK’s nuclear skills base would be retained.
Emilie Isaacs, Urenco Head of Government Affairs, said: “Without nuclear energy, and its contribution to hydrogen production, meeting a net zero target will be impossible or very, very costly. Nuclear perfectly complements renewables and hydrogen in a net zero world and these three technologies are the future of our energy world.
“The recognition of the valuable role nuclear can play in UK Government’s 10 Point Plan for net zero transition and subsequent Energy White Paper has been encouraging and we look forward to seeing and supporting the next steps to realise this ambition.”
