Urenco encouraged by UK nuclear, wind and solar collaboration

20 May 2021

Today, a joint announcement by the Nuclear Industry Association, RenewableUK and Solar Energy UK, called for urgent action to build new wind, nuclear and solar capacity and for a binding target of 100% grid decarbonisation by 2035.

The associations represent the three leading zero-carbon power generators. Their plea comes six months ahead of the COP26 climate change summit and was in response to data showing that electricity provided by the grid was on average 20% dirtier in April 2021 than in April 2020.

Decarbonising the grid is essential to hitting the UK Government’s new target of a 78% reduction in emissions by 2035, and net zero by 2050.

Emilie Isaacs, Urenco Head of Government Affairs, said: “We believe that nuclear power perfectly complements energy generated from renewables in a net zero world. These technologies belong together and they are the future of energy systems.”
