Following her success in placing first in the regional competition, Urenco Nuclear Stewardship employee, Elly Hennelly (formerly Glithero), achieved third place in the national final of the Nuclear Institute’s Young Generation Network (YGN) speaking competition on Wednesday 8 May.
The annual competition saw six young nuclear professionals presenting on this year’s theme of Nuclear for Net Zero. Elly’s talk, entitled ‘What does a plastic bottle and nuclear waste have in common? The back end’s contribution to the net zero debate’, discussed the contribution that those who work in waste management can make to net zero.
Elly said: “This year’s competition theme was a fantastic opportunity to discuss net zero and our industry’s important contribution to reaching the global targets. In a debate where the focus is often on nuclear new build, I thought it interesting to reflect on how responsible management of nuclear legacies and the materials arising from them through decommissioning can support advocacy of nuclear for net zero.
“Thank you to the YGN and all its volunteers for the opportunity to speak. A huge congratulations to the other winners and well done to all those who presented their interesting topics with such passion. It is certainly motivating to be among other likeminded young professionals who are the next generation of individuals to help to ensure that net zero goals are achieved.”
Urenco is strongly committed to reducing our carbon emissions. We have joined the Climate Pledge (partner organisation of the UN’s Race to Zero Campaign) and have undertaken to achieve net zero carbon emissions in advance of 2040. This is 10 years ahead of the UK’s net zero by 2050 target.
