UK hydrogen strategy recognises nuclear energy’s role

27 August 2021 Global

Last week, the highly anticipated hydrogen strategy was released by the UK Government.

It was encouraging to see the strategy confirming that nuclear reactors - large, small, current and advanced - have a critical role in producing low-carbon hydrogen.

The strategy contains a number of points on nuclear energy’s contribution, including high temperature nuclear electrolysis and thermochemical water splitting. The role and impact of these nuclear-powered methods will be assessed and integrated into the UK Government’s modelling for future production pathways.

The Government has outlined an approach to supporting multiple technologies and committed to providing further detail in 2022.

It will be important for Urenco and the wider UK nuclear industry to contribute to the production strategy, including through the published consultations.

At Urenco, we believe that nuclear energy has a key role to play in tackling climate change as a proven, reliable, CO2 free technology which can produce both electricity and hydrogen. We look forward to presenting our thoughts in detail over the coming months.
