The delegation visited our UK site at Capenhurst on Monday, September 1, as part of a range of visits to UK nuclear energy sites. This was in collaboration with the UK Department for Business and Trade and the British Consul General, Calgary.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, September 3, Urenco attended and spoke at Canada-UK Nuclear Day at the Canadian Embassy in London. Urenco had also sponsored the event, which was a bilateral to the WNA Symposium which was taking place elsewhere in the capital.
Urenco’s General Manager for Advanced Nuclear Technology, Steve Threlfall, told a ‘building resilience’ panel that investments in the nuclear fuel supply chain are large by their nature and consistency in government policy will help support its expansion in the most sustainable manner.
As an example of this, Steve said that Urenco’s Advanced Fuels Facility (AFF) in the UK was being established to serve the global SMR market, and co-investment from the UK Government had proved a positive, enabling factor.
The delegation visit, which featured representatives from Sask Power, Ontario Power Generation and New Brunswick Power, had been taken on a tour of the UK site, including a drive-by the AFF to discuss the development of the project.
The visit was an opportunity to identify opportunities to increase cooperation between the Canadian nuclear sector and Urenco, as the UK and Canada scale up their nuclear programmes and select first SMR technologies for deployment.
