Urenco backs training of more STEM teachers
15 January 2025 Global NewsUrenco has extended a social impact partnership with a UK education charity which will result in more STEM teachers being trained and developed in the next year.
Since 2019, Urenco has supported Teach First in its drive to recruit and train more STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) teachers, helping to prepare students from low-income communities to be the next generation of nuclear operators, engineers and scientists.
Our support has already helped Teach First to train 45 new STEM teachers over the last three years.
This partnership has now been extended and will support a further 20 teachers to develop over the next 12 months.
Teach First is an education charity which has trained and placed talented teachers in schools serving disadvantaged communities in England since 2002.
We were the first nuclear company to support STEM education through Teach First, joining other organisations in partnership with the charity to increase opportunities for underserved students.
We will be offering additional support to new teachers who will be based near our enrichment site in Capenhurst, Cheshire and our Head Office which will be located in Paddington, London, from the spring 2025.
Head of Fundraising Relationships for Teach First, Andrew Baker, said:
"We are delighted that Urenco is continuing its commitment to support STEM education through Teach First, an established and respected route to encourage and develop a more diverse and inclusive pipeline of future STEM professionals.
"Through your social impact Teach First will be able to train and develop twenty new STEM teachers over the next year, impacting over two and a half thousand pupils, as well as creating opportunities to engage with schools through coaching and virtual question and answer sessions. This is in addition to around 50 STEM teachers Urenco has already supported through this partnership.”
Urenco’s Richie Education Programme fosters young people’s interest in STEM and is delivered in schools and online. In 2023 we were estimated to have reached over 57,000 pupils.
