Urenco took part in a fireside chat at the UK Pavilion in the Blue Zone, hosted by World Nuclear Association and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) on Friday, November 14.
Our Head of Government Affairs, Emilie Isaacs, discussed tripling with the Director General of the WNA, Sama Bilbao y Leon, during the #Fission Forward segment.
Emilie said that Urenco was strengthening its LEU capacity, as part of its capacity programme, across its sites. It could further expand its capacity to support the push to triple capacity by 2050.
She added that Urenco was also working towards advanced fuels for the smaller reactors of tomorrows such as SMRs, and building a HALEU plant at its Capenhurst site in the UK. She said partnerships in the fuel cycle, such as those between Urenco, Cameco and Westinghouse, could further strengthen the tripling push.
Emilie took part in a separate interview with Sama, which you can watch here.
One of the recurrent messages from COP is to ensure a just energy transition for society, and Emilie emphasised that the nuclear industry’s investment in jobs and skills benefitted communities, and there was potential for workers from fossil fuel industries to find new opportunities in nuclear as part of the transition.
New signatories to the tripling pledge
In other developments, Sama announced that two more countries, Rwanda and Senegal, had joined the Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy by 2050, taking the total number of states to 33.
The WNA also released the World Nuclear Outlook Report, which said that global nuclear capacity could now reach 1,428 GWe by 2050, surpassing the 1,200 target originally set as part of the tripling pledge.
