Urenco response to publication of the British Energy Security Strategy

07 April 2022 Global News

The strategy sets out how Great Britain will ramp up its domestic energy provision to ensure security of supply.

The strategy published today, Thursday April 7, 2022, sets out how Great Britain will ramp up its domestic energy provision to ensure security of supply.

We are encouraged that the Government has included nuclear power as a crucial part of the energy mix, accelerating delivery with up to eight new reactors that could be delivered.

We further welcome the ambition of up to 24GW of electricity to come from nuclear energy by 2050, representing up to 25 percent of Britain’s projected energy demand, with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) becoming a key part of the pipeline.  Pushing ahead with the Sizewell C nuclear project alone, for example, would produce the equivalent of 5.4 billion cubic metres of gas per year

Urenco is pleased to have been a part of the Government’s engagement with industry prior to the release of the strategy.

Emilie Isaacs, Head of Government Affairs for Urenco, said: “The strategy provides a positive way forward for the nuclear industry as a whole, and we are ready to play our part and support the Government to deliver on these commitments.

“We’ll need both nuclear and renewable energy sources to achieve a secure and reliable supply, and the strategy builds on the Prime Minister’s plan for a Green Industrial Revolution.

“We are clear on this: nuclear energy is safe and clean and can provide consistent, low carbon electricity.”
