Urenco debates the clean energy transition at the IAEA Scientific Forum

Urenco’s CEO, Boris Schucht, contributed to the debate on the future of nuclear and its role in achieving decarbonisation efforts at the IAEA Scientific Forum yesterday.

Mr Schucht’s speech, during the opening session, followed a statement by Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi. Other speakers in this session included: Alok Sharma MP, Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Chair of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow next year; and Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IAE).

Mr Schucht said: “Nuclear can and should play an important role in the clean energy transition. Achieving a sustainable energy system and meeting our ambitious climate targets will be much harder without the existing nuclear power and without new nuclear investments… Nuclear perfectly complements renewables and hydrogen in a net zero world. These three technologies fit very well together and are the future of our energy world.”

The two day event, 22–23 September, is held at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna. It is covering innovations in nuclear technology and advancements in reactor design and construction, with a theme of sustainability and decarbonisation running throughout.
