Urenco shares fuel cycle expertise in Miami

02 May 2019 Global U-Battery

The World Nuclear Fuel Cycle conference was the setting for Urenco providing its latest insight into the developments and innovation in the fuel cycle which will further the benefits of nuclear energy.

David Fletcher, Urenco’s Head of Business Development, joined a panel discussion on next generation fuels at the event last month, where he presented Urenco’s capabilities in this area and the steps we are taking to realise this progression in the fuel cycle.

Next generation fuels will be used for current and new nuclear power plants, research and test reactors, and have other benefits, for example for medical isotopes facilities. The fuels include High Assay Low Enriched Uranium - HA-LEU (U235 enriched up to 19.75 per cent).

This work is within the core expertise of Urenco, as a leader in the civil nuclear industry for nearly 50 years, providing enrichment services for utility customers.

Detailed planning, and early engagement with regulators, is needed to solve the practical and logistical challenges of producing and transporting next generation fuels and Urenco is currently discussing requirements with utility customers and reactor developers.

Urenco is also leading on the development of an Advanced Modular Reactor, U-Battery, and more information can be found here.
