Urenco Nuclear Stewardship gave valuable insight into running a major decommissioning programme to an international audience this week, as a part of Urenco’s strong commitment to responsible nuclear stewardship and sustainability.
Delegates attending the Integrated Waste Management Conference and Exhibition in Cumbria heard a detailed presentation on the decommissioning and demolition of a diffusion plant at Urenco’s Capenhurst site in Cheshire and the industry knowledge which has been gained from the project.
Dave Nelligan, Managing Director of Urenco Nuclear Stewardship, said: “Urenco Nuclear Stewardship has pioneered waste management strategies, which can be readily applied to the wider nuclear industry and to other industries. We have made particular progress in dealing with metal contamination and welcomed the opportunity to share our learnings with an international audience.”
The biennial conference is the largest of its kind outside the US. It is run by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Nuclear Institute, and also included speakers from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Integrated Waste Management refers to a single strategy for managing waste within the nuclear industry, including planning, preparation, treatment, packaging, storage and final disposal. By bringing key representatives from across the industry into the same room, the conference allowed for useful discussions on the benefits of greater integration and coordination to provide long-term and sustainable waste solutions.
