One of Urenco’s long standing sustainability commitments is to inspire young people to engage with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects through its Richie education programme.
The programme, which is designed to nurture an interest in and support a pipeline of skills and talent within the nuclear industry, has now reached more than a quarter of a million students worldwide. This is through a combination of interactive school workshops and digital resources created in partnership with the British Science Association (BSA).
To maximise the success of these resources, in 2018 we supported the BSA with their international expansion by launching our ‘Enrich my Classroom’ resource in the Netherlands. In 2019 and 2020, we are continuing this work by piloting the resource in Germany and the USA.
Urenco also recognises the importance of developing its employees in order to ensure its long term sustainability. We recruit and retain talented people and run apprenticeships schemes, graduate programmes and training at our sites to support this. A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion is also key and we have set enhanced goals for recruitment, succession planning and training.
Another area of sustainability success for Urenco is the responsible management of nuclear materials. In this respect, operations are planned to start later this year at a new dedicated facility, the Tails Management Facility, in the UK.
For more details on our sustainability goals and achievements see our 2018 Sustainability Report, which will be published on 6 June.
This film was made in collaboration with ITN Productions and the Chemical Industries Association as part of a programme called Solutions for our Future.
