September 16, 2013 – Eunice, NM – The URENCO USA uranium enrichment plant located outside Eunice, NM achieved a capacity milestone today by introducing uranium hexafluoride gas (UF6) into its newest centrifuge cascade. The activation of this cascade brings the enrichment plant to slightly over 3 million separative work units (SWU) of production capacity.
“Today marks a great achievement for URENCO USA. In June 2010 we began enriching uranium in our very first cascade. It is astounding that just thirty-nine months later, we are achieving over 3 million SWU of production capability. Only through the commitment and dedication of our people and the support and responsiveness of our regulators and local governments to build and operate the first new nuclear facility in the United States in close to three decades have we reached this milestone. I am extremely proud of them and look forward to continuing to expand the plants SWU capacity,” said URENCO USA President and Chief Executive Officer Gregory OD Smith.
Employingindustry-leading centrifuge technology, URENCO USA is the only domestic operating uranium enrichment plant in the United States and plays a vital role in the nuclear fuel supply chain. The plant has 350 full time employees with approximately 1,000 construction workers presently on site. URENCO USA is fully owned and operated by Louisiana Energy Services, LLC.
