URENCO Nederland (Almelo)
URENCO’s site in the Netherlands is located in Almelo, a town in the East of the country. As with all URENCO’s sites the operational process utilises state-of-the art technology, based on the centrifuge method: the most clean and energy-efficient way to enrich uranium.
Stable Isotopes
At our site in Almelo, we also use the centrifuge to separate other isotopes than uranium. Our Stable Isotopes department separates various isotopes for medical and industrial applications.
History
The Almelo site was founded in 1970. The site now employs around 240 people. Two enrichment plants, SP4 and SP5, are in operation. Former plants SP1, SP2 and SP3 were fully decommissioned and brought back to green field sites. The newest plant SP5 began operation in 2000 and houses 75% of total site capacity.
Achievements
During 2008 the Almelo site has successfully completed the installation and commissioning of cascades in Hall 5 of SP5. Construction of Hall 6 progressed well and first production is expected in the course of 2009.
Capacity stood at 4,400 tSW/a at 31 December 2009.
