Building and Operating URENCO USA*

In support of major construction work at URENCO USA,* LES’ organization has grown to 304 employees (excluding contractors and construction workers).

The LES operational organization dedicates significant effort and resources to develop procedures and related training programs in compliance with the licence and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) requirements.

Major Milestones

June 23, 2006   The NRC issues a license to construct and operate the URENCO USA* facility

August 29, 2006   Groundbreaking ceremony held at construction site five miles east of Eunice, New Mexico in Lea County

June 15, 2007   First concrete placement

October 22, 2008   Shared access to the Centrifuge Assembly Building begins

October 24, 2008   Dedication ceremony for Pete V. Domenici Separation Building

November 21, 2008   LES announces plans to pursue expansion of URENCO USA* from 3.3 million seperative work units (SWU) to 5.9 million SWU

February 11, 2009   LES receives verbal authorization from the NRC to receive uranium hexafluoride for the start up of Hot Acceptance Testing

February 15, 2009   First shipment of Uranium Hexafluriode arrives on site

May 21, 2009  Site celebration held in honor of five million work hours without a construction related lost time accident

September 24, 2009  First machine installation in the Pete V. Domenici Separation Building Module

November 13, 2009  Safety milestone met - 60 days with no recordable injuries

LES continues to enjoy strong support from local communities, the State of New Mexico and United States Federal Government. This is driven by LES' commitment to engage with stakeholders throughout all stages of construction.

*The National Enrichment Facility was rebranded URENCO USA on January 2, 2010.
